Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesia relies on imported soybeans to meet the needs of various food industries, including tofu and tempeh. Unfortunately, the current pandemic conditions have made soybeans scarce and the price has skyrocketed because demand is not comparable to production. The effect was that the tofu and tempe artisans had a production strike.
Indonesia still has to compete with other countries for supplies of imported soybeans, including China, which is eager to import soybeans from the United States. Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo also said that the soy issue is a global problem.
“As far as soy is concerned, there is a problem with the global contraction. This may also be due to a part of the global pandemic as global soy prices are affected, especially from the United States and that is what we feel. in Indonesia, “he said in Jakarta on Monday (1/4/2021).
However, the rise in the price of soy asphyxiated artisans and made it difficult for them to raise the price of their products to the public. SYL said Indonesia was not the only country to experience this.
“Not only in Indonesia is there a contraction like this. In Argentina, for example, there is also a controversy like this,” SYL said.
The price of soy in the market currently reaches more than Rp.9 thousand / kg. In fact, in normal times it is still in the range of Rp.7 thousand / kg. The significant increase of around 35 percent was the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic, especially production in producing countries such as the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, Ukraine and others.
The price of imported soy, which has been used by producers of tofu and tempe in the country of origin, is already high, so the impact on the price in Indonesia is even greater.
The high import price of soybeans is not solely due to production factors. However, this occurs because soybeans are a non-dairy product that can be freely imported at any time and regardless of volume without going through the recommendation of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The president of the Indonesian Tempe and Tofu Cooperatives Association, Aip Syarifuddin, said this condition occurred because China asked for more soybeans. As a result, distribution to other countries was discontinued.
“The average production so far is balanced, offer and demand. The biggest demand is China with 75 million tons per year. While we only averaged 2.5 million tons, last year it was 2.7 million tons, “Aip told CNBC Indonesia, Saturday (1/2/2020).
“China’s demand for 75 million tons has risen to 92 million tons now, he said, yes, by February Lunar New Year. Then make another 25 million tons of reserves, he said so that the pigs are fat for the Chinese New Year festival, so China’s demand is extraordinary, “he continued.
