Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Japanese government is considering a plan to establish a state of emergency. This will probably apply in the capital, Tokyo.
Prime Minister (PM) Yoshihide Suga said he would consider the announcement as corona (Covid-19) cases continued to rise and weigh on the country’s medical system. Previously, he reportedly declined due to possible financial damage.
“Even during the three days of the New Year holidays, cases did not drop in the wider area of Tokyo,” Suga said at a news conference to mark the start of 2021. Reuters, Monday (1/4/2021).
“We believe that a stronger message is needed.”
As a temporary measure, restaurants and karaoke rooms in the Tokyo area were asked to close at 8 pm or before 10 pm. Meanwhile, businesses serving alcohol must close at 7 pm.
He also said he would shorten restaurant hours to help stop an increase in infections in some areas. Including Osaka and Hokkaido.
If announced, this will be the second time that parts of Japan have entered a state of emergency related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Previously, a similar status was maintained for more than a month in the spring of last year, when schools and non-essential businesses were called for closure.
Japanese TV station Fuji TV reported that the new case of the corona virus in Sakura Country has overwhelmed several health centers. Japan experienced a record high of 4,520 cases per day on December 31, 2020.
Until now, Japan has relied on voluntary closures and travel restrictions rather than lockdown measures (emergency shutdown) are narrow as seen in other parts of the world. Although the number of cases in Japan is negligible compared to many parts of Europe and America, Japan still has the challenge of hosting the Olympics in Tokyo this summer.
The largest sporting event in the world should be held in 2020. However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced him to withdraw to 2021.
At the end of last December, Japan temporarily banned non-resident foreigners from entering the country. This came after authorities detected the highly contagious type of coronavirus up to 70%, B117, which was first discovered in the UK.
