LIVE – The Press Community opposes one of the articles in the information of the Chief of State Police of the Republic of Indonesia Number: Mak / 1 / I / 2021 on Compliance with Prohibition of Activities, Use of Symbols and Attributes and Termination of Activities of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), signed on January 1, 2021.

There are four things transmitted in the edict, one of which is considered incompatible with the spirit of democracy that respects freedom of information and also threatens journalists and the media, whose main task is to seek information and disseminate it to the public.

One of the contents of the edict that was challenged was article 2d. The content of the article states that the public does not access, upload or disseminate content related to FPI or through websites or social networks.

Quoted from his written statement, the press community expressed four attitudes.

This attitude was conveyed by Abdul Manan as President of the Indonesian Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), Atal S. Depari as General President of the Indonesian Association of Journalists (PWI), Hendriana Yadi, General President of the Association of Journalists of Indonesia Indonesian Television (IJTI), Hendra Eka as general secretary. Indonesian Photojournalist (PFI, Kemal E. Gani as President of the Editor-in-Chief Forum and Wenseslaus Manggut as President of the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (AMSI).

1. The information of the Chief of Police in article 2d is excessive and does not conform to our spirit of a democratic country that values the right of society to obtain and disseminate information.

This matter is clearly established in article 28F of the 1945 Constitution, which establishes: “Everyone has the right to communicate and obtain information to develop their personal and social environment, and the right to search, obtain, possess, store, process and transmit information through all available channels. “.

2. This edict violates the duties of journalists and the media, who by their profession fulfill the function of seeking and disseminating information to the public, including about the FPI. The journalist’s right to seek information is regulated in article 4 of Law No. 40 of 1999 regarding the Press that establishes: “(3) To guarantee press freedom, the national press has the right to seek, obtain and disseminate ideas and information.”

The content of the information, which will process anyone who disseminates information about the FPI, can also be classified as a “dissemination prohibition”, which is contrary to article 4 paragraph 2 of the Press Law.

3. Urge the Chief of Police to withdraw Article 2d of the Information because it contains provisions that do not conform to the principles of a democratic state, do not comply with the 1945 Constitution and are contrary to the Press Law.

4. Encourage the national press to continue reporting on various matters of public interest as ordered by the Press Law.
