Earthquake shakes Nias, possible tsunami?

jpnn.com, JAKARTA – BMKG reported that a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred in South Nias Regency, North Sumatra province, on Thursday (12/31) afternoon at 17.49.03 WIB.

The head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Bambang Setiyo Prayitno said that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at the coordinates 0.32 north latitude (LU) and 97.64 east longitude (BT) or located precisely in the sea at a distance of 34 km to the southwest of South Nias. North Sumatra at a depth of 23 km.

By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a kind of shallow earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate.

The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake has a thrust failure motion mechanism.

The impact of the earthquake was felt at Teluk Dalam II-III on the Mercalli Scale (Modified Mercalli Intensity, MMI).

“So far the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake has not been reported. The modeling results show that the earthquake had no potential for a tsunami,” he said.

As of 06/18 WIB, BMKG monitoring results had shown no further seismic activity.
