Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea (South Korea) regarding the development of the KF-X fighter jet is reportedly fractured. The reason is that the joint fighter jet project called KF-X (Korean Fighter eXperimental) in Korea and IF-X (Indonesian Fighter eXperimental) in Indonesia was discontinued because RI did not pay the delays for the development of the aircraft.

Reported Korea JoongangThe development project for the Korea Fighter eXperimental (KF-X), the first fighter plane to be assembled by South Korea, has cost billions of won. In fact, the project was rated as the most expensive military project in the history of the Ginseng country. Total development costs are estimated at around 8.5 trillion won ($ 7.8 billion), of which 1.6 trillion won, or 20%, will be paid by Indonesia under a joint partnership contract between the two countries. signed in 2016.

On their own terms, negotiations between the Jakarta and Seoul parties have always reached a dead end. At the Indonesian government level, voices related to this project are still confused.

Earlier, Deputy Defense Minister (Wamenhan) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono had opened up about the future fate of this project. Although he did not explicitly state that this project was canceled, he said that the benefits that Indonesia would get from this project were not too significant.

“Look, the KFX is a fighter jet. We sent engineers to Korea. This is what I learned. We have to spend $ 2 billion, and in the end we get 1 prototype,” Trenggono said in a special joint interview. CNBC Indonesia, Friday (10/7/2020).

From the prototype, it later turned out that Indonesia did not have full ownership. In fact, Indonesia only has a minority ownership stake, while the majority belongs to South Korea.

“We have property it’s only about 15%. But there are 9 technologies that are controlled by Korea, they don’t give them to us, we can’t, “said Trenggono.

Not to mention, there are provisions on age limits for Indonesian engineers shipped to South Korea. In fact, since the dispatch of these engineers, the government hopes that in the future there will be a transfer of technology to the country.

However, this was clarified by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menkopolhukam) Mahfud MD. He had confirmed that the discussion on the KFX / IFX fighter jet manufacturing cooperation project between the South Korean government and the Indonesian government would continue.

Mahfud met with South Korean Defense Minister (Menhan) Jeong Kyeong-doo at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry of Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Jakarta, on Thursday (12/12/2019). “The discussion will continue,” Mahfud said at the time.

He said that the South Korean defense minister deliberately came to Indonesia to meet with Prabowo. According to Mahfud, the visit was aimed at continuing the project’s cooperation. Mahfud said that the two countries are currently still in the negotiation process to continue with the project.

“Currently it is being negotiated and it is from Indonesia that Pak Prabowo is the defense minister to dialogue between defense ministers,” Mahfud said at the time.

Defense Minister Prabowo himself led a debate on the development of this aircraft last September. However, the minister who is also a former Special Forces Special Forces (Kopassus) Danjen only said that he would first review the entire content of the country’s defense budget and weapons system.

Meanwhile, in South Korea, this splitting effect also occurred when the prototype aircraft had all its parts installed. The executive director of the Korean aviation industry (KAI), Ahn Hyunho, as an aircraft manufacturer did not mention Indonesia in his official statement. Although Indonesia is the main partner in the development of the aircraft.

“Thanks to the great partnership and collaboration of the industry, universities and institutes, we were able to complete the process in the middle of the Covid-19 crisis. Nothing else will work. We will be successful in the KF-X project and we can help the aerospace industry to succeed. and the national economy (South Korea), “said Ahn Hyunho on Tuesday (9/15/2020).

Not just from companies, the K-pop state parliament also opened their voices on this matter. According to Shin Won-shik of the opposition People’s Power Party, Indonesia only paid out 227.2 billion won of the 831.6 billion won it promised this year. The payments made by Jakarta so far only cover about 13% of its commitments.
