The government officially prohibits the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) from carrying out activities, along with its symbols and attributes, on the territory of the Republic of Indonesia. Since its inception, FPI has generated controversy.

As the historian Merle Calvin Ricklefs noted in the book “Modern Indonesia History 1200-2008”, FPI was founded in 1998. Since its establishment, the FPI has been led directly by Muhammad Rizieq Shihab (MRS). At the beginning of its appearance, the FPI became the main opponent of the United States (USA), which at that time began to invade Afghanistan.

Ricklefs noted that since its inception, FPI activities have ranged from attacking and destroying “immoral places,” such as bars, massage parlors, nightclubs, and gambling venues. Furthermore, the FPI is said to have frequently attacked other religious groups that are not in line with Habib Rizieq’s understanding, one of which is the Ahmadiyah group.

The president of Muhammadiyah at the time, Ahmad Syafii Maarif, later dubbed the FPI a ‘robed bully’ because of this barbaric act.

In addition, the FPI also generated controversy in 2003 due to the large case of immoral places. This case started when sweeping FPI at the disco. Habib Rizieq accused an official of protecting the disco’s businessmen. As a result, Habib Rizieq was imprisoned after being charged under articles 154 and 160 of the Penal Code.

Not only that, the FPI also had a dispute with the President of the Republic of Indonesia from 1999 to 2001, Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) in 2005. Gus Dur at that time was a defender of Ahmadiyah who became the target of the FPI. . Even Gus Dur did not hesitate to call the FPI a “bastard organization”.

The FPI has once again generated controversy. The FPI clashed with the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Belief (AKKBB) on June 1, 2008. Habib Rizieq was again a suspect.

This case keeps rolling. The panel of judges sentenced Habib Rizieq to 1 year and 6 months in prison. Habib was found guilty of sedition.

The FPI has also had a heated dispute with Basuki Tjahja Purnama (Ahok), who was then governor of DKI Jakarta in 2014.
