Religious Minister Gus Yaqut Says Ahmadi and Shiite Citizens Must Be Protected

JAKARTA, KOMPAS TV – Yaqut Minister of Religion Cholil Qoumas said the government would confirm the religious rights of Ahmadis and Shiites in Indonesia.

That is why the man who is familiarly called Gus Yaqut said that he did not want any religious groups, including the Ahmadiyah and Shia minorities, to be expelled from their villages due to differences in belief.

Gus Yaqut added that the Ministry of Religion would facilitate a more intense dialogue to bridge existing differences.

As is well known, Gus Yaqut’s statement responded to a request by Jakarta’s Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic State University professor Azyumardi Azra that the government affirm minority groups.
