KONTAN.CO.ID – Geneva. The new variant of the mutated coronavirus is believed to be more infectious and deadly. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) considered that the news was unfounded.
WHO is studying variants of the corona virus found in Britain and South Africa. The WHO added that there was no evidence that the virus was more lethal or more severe than the common variant, and the best people can do is try to contain transmission.
At regular briefings at WHO headquarters in Geneva, officials said they continued to receive data on the variant and there were reports from the UK that the new variant could be more contagious. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that they are working with scientists to understand how these genetic changes affect the way the virus behaves.
He stressed that the corona virus mutation is not new. “Viruses mutate all the time – that’s natural and predictable,” says Tedros.

Tedros said preventing the spread of the virus as soon as possible was a very helpful step. “The longer we let the virus spread, the greater the chances that it will change,” he said.
He added that governments and people around the world must take the necessary precautions to limit the transmission of the corona virus.
Meanwhile, US President-elect Joe Biden received the COVID-19 vaccine at ChristianaCare Hospital in Newark, Delaware, on Monday (12/21/2020). Biden received the first injection of a vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech. The injection was administered by Tabe Masa, nurse and head of the Hospital Employee Health Unit.
