Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Policeman noted that so far there are still around 6,000 members who are members of terrorist groups Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) which is still active in Indonesia.
Inspector General Argo Yuwono, head of the Public Relations Division of the Indonesian National Police, said that the terrorist group that is banned in Indonesia still exists through the use of various financing models.
“According to the explanations of various suspects, around 6,000 JI networks are still active. This is our concern,” Argo told reporters at the National Police headquarters, Jakarta, on Friday (12/18).
Argo said there are at least three models of ways that the Jamaah Islamiyah group can raise funds. First, they take advantage of official charity boxes scattered in various regions of Indonesia.
Then they also took advantage of funding from the One Care Foundation. Regarding this modality, Argo said, the Anti-terrorist team of Special Detachment 88 of the National Police continues to investigate.
“Third, from the members themselves. There are many members of JI, their professions. There are sellers of duck, fried banana and others. Five percent is reserved and then sent to JI Pusat,” said Argo.
The money, according to Polri’s data, was used to pay for all of JI’s networks and cells that were scattered across Indonesia and had no permanent jobs.
From November to December 2020, at least Densus 88 arrested 23 terrorists scattered in various areas. Among them are major terrorists who have been involved in various major events in Indonesia.
The two terrorists are Upik Lawanga and Zulkarnaen. Upik himself is a member of JI and is expected to be Dr. Azhari’s successor. He was involved in a series of terrorist bombs such as the Tentena bomb, the Poso sports bomb, the central market bomb, and other terrorist acts from 2004 to 2006.
Meanwhile, Zulkarnaen is the commander of Askari JI who is also involved in a number of major incidents in Indonesia. For example, the case of the Bali Bombing that occurred in 2002.
The two had been on the run for a dozen years before they could finally be arrested in late 2020.
