Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Member of Commission IX DPR RI Saleh Partaonan Daulay urged the government to find out why China ordered 100 million doses coronavirus vaccine (Covid-19) manufactured by the German-American company Pfizer / BioNTech in 2021.
According to him, this step is strange because China has produced its own vaccines, namely those made by Sinovac and Sinopharm.
“It’s a bit weird, yeah. They have their own vaccines, but they buy them elsewhere. From a financial and safety point of view, of course it’s not profitable,” Saleh said. CNNIndonesia.com, Friday (12/18).
He stated that the deepening had to be done fairly. The reason is that China could import vaccines within the framework of academic cooperation, as Indonesia did through PT Bio Farma (Persero) with Sinovac.
“We will produce the red and white vaccine ourselves. However, at the same time we will import the vaccine from China for national needs. The import of vaccines is done considering that the number of doses required is very large,” he said.
From that, Saleh added, the public need not be suspicious of China’s steps to import vaccines from other countries. He hopes that investigations into why China imports the Covid-19 vaccine can maintain the public’s trust in the vaccine made by Sinovac.
“The hope is that negative assumptions can be avoided. In the end, the level of confidence in Chinese vaccines can be maintained,” Saleh said.
China is known to have ordered 100 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine made by the German-American company, Pfizer / BioNTech, in 2021.
The Chinese pharmaceutical company, Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group, said it would buy at least 100 million doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine and await government approval for use next year.
Pfizer, a US-based pharmaceutical company, has partnered with Fosun Pharma for the development and distribution of vaccines in China.
Meanwhile, Fosun Pharma said that the vaccine procurement this time would be imported from BioNTech’s production facilities in Germany.
“We are pleased to conclude a vaccine supply agreement with BioNTech, which is an important step in Fosun Pharma and BioNTech’s efforts to achieve vaccine accessibility and affordability in China,” said Fosun Pharma Leader and CEO Wu Yifang.
Indonesia itself received the Sinovac vaccine from China on December 6. President Joko Widodo, who oversaw the landings, said 1.2 million vaccines had landed at Soekarno-Hatta airport.
Jokowi has decided to make the vaccine free to all Indonesians.
