Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Singapore became the first country in Southeast Asia to immediately administer the corona vaccine (Covid-19). Vaccinations in the city-state will begin in December 2020 through the third quarter of 2021.
This was announced in conjunction with the approval of the use of the Pfizer / BioNTec vaccine in Singapore. Local officials say the government has enough vaccines for 5.7 million citizens.
Not just Singaporeans, foreigners living long term (long term residents) will also get the vaccine. Immunizations for the elderly, state officials and medical personnel will be prioritized.
“The Singapore Health Research Agency approved the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine during a pandemic,” Lee said in a speech broadcast on local television quoted on Tuesday (12/15/2020).
“If it goes according to plan, we will have enough vaccines for the entire population of Singapore by the third half of 2021.”
Still, there is no coercion for residents to get vaccinated. But he, as the country’s leader and a member of the cabinet, will be injected first to show that the vaccine is safe.
“We believe that vaccines are safe,” he said.
Previously, Singapore had budgeted up to one billion dollars or (10.6 trillion rupees). Not just Pfizer / BioNTech, the vaccines will also be sourced from Moderna Inc and Sinovac.
