The lobby of Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto reaped results. Finally, the United States (USA) gave a signal to sell F-15 and F-18 fighter jets to Indonesia.
The achievement was achieved after months of meetings between the top defense officials of the two countries. During the Nikkei-Asia launch on Friday (11/12/2020), the acting US Defense Minister Christopher Miller visited Indonesia this week to meet with Prabowo.
According to an official source from the Defense Ministry, during the meeting Miller agreed to sell the two fighter jet models to Indonesia.
Actually, Miller’s main agenda was to discuss the South China Sea. A waterway where many territorial claims overlap and is touted as China’s place to build military bases.
His visit was also part of a follow-up after the United States lifted Prabowo’s entry ban on allegations of human rights abuses in the past. The lifting of the ban allows him to hold high-level talks with Pentagon officials.
Indonesian Defense Ministry Director General of Defense Strategy Rodon Pedrason said the relationship between Indonesia and the United States had made China nervous.
“They ask, ‘Why did you accept them?’ We respond diplomatically. We do not want China or the United States to feel neglected, “Pedrason said, quoted by Nikkei-Asia.
Miller also met with TNI Commander-in-Chief Hadi Tjahjanto and discussed plans to increase training between the two troops.
Pedrason said there were some concerns that US policy could change with Joe Biden, who will assume the presidency next month. Although he believes that Washington will not breach a signed agreement.
“It’s how ready we are to provide the budget,” he said.
