Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The son of President-elect of the United States (USA) Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, is under a federal investigation for tax violations.
Quoted from AFPHunter told the media on Wednesday (9/12/2020) as something that is seen as an attempt by the Republican Party to tarnish his reputation.
“Yesterday I learned for the first time that the US Attorney’s Office in Delaware informed my legal advisers, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax matters,” Hunter Biden said in a statement issued by his father’s presidential transition team.
“I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of the matter will show that I am conducting my business legally and properly, including with the benefit of a professional tax advisor.”
Biden, 50, is an attorney who founded a consulting and investment firm, worked in private equity and served on the board of directors of several organizations, including the national rail company Amtrak.
Disclosures about the investigation are not detailed, but may reignite Republican anger over the Biden family, including Hunter Biden’s business deals and Joe Biden’s anti-corruption campaign in Ukraine when he was vice president of the United States.
Meanwhile, Biden’s transition team said in a statement that included Hunter’s statement that “President-elect Biden is very proud of his son, who has overcome difficult challenges, including violent personal attacks in recent months, only to get out stronger”.
The investigation was revealed just five days before the Electoral College is expected to formally elect Joe Biden as the next president, following the Nov. 3 election in which he defeated President Donald Trump.
During his reelection campaign, Trump made repeated accusations that Biden was a “corrupt” family and a “criminal enterprise.”
Since 2019, Trump and his Republican allies have targeted Hunter for dealing with Ukraine and China, and there are unconfirmed reports that Hunter Biden’s laptop was housed in a repair shop in Delaware and was said to contain incriminating data. But so far no valid evidence for that claim has emerged.
