Governor of DKI Jakarta Province, Anies Baswedan elected as a member of the C40 Cities Steering Committee (Vice President) with the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike. The election is scheduled in London, England, on Friday (4/11).
As Vice President of C40, Anies will provide strategic direction to overcome the climate crisis for a global network covering the 97 best cities in the world.
Anies and Governor Koike will also work together and support the mayors of the C40 members to foster the city’s economic recovery due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The recovery uses an ecological and equitable approach, in addition to dealing with the climate crisis.
“Jakarta is determined to expand the scope of the C40 to cooperate with the city and other stakeholders, in order to meet the goals of implementing transformative climate action, referring to the Paris Agreement,” Anies was quoted as saying in the statement from press received. The provincial government of DKI Jakarta itself issued Governor’s Instruction number 66 on air quality control in August 2019. In this regulation, there are seven actions to control air pollution.
The development of facilities to support the use of emission-free vehicles, such as electric bicycles and buses, is also pursued.
The construction of cycle paths has also been a priority since 2019. Currently, 78.4 kilometers of cycle paths have been built on 22 roads, out of a total development goal of 500 kilometers by 2030.
“Recent developments in the East, Southeast Asia and Oceania region have created unprecedented opportunities, namely collaboration with the younger generation, the private sector, the national government, as well as local and international non-governmental partners,” Anies added.
C40 Cities itself is a network that connects 97 major cities in the world that are committed to taking progressive steps related to climate change, for a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future. The C40 represents more than 700 million people in the world and a quarter of the world economy.
