Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) stated that he had summoned the British Ambassador to Jakarta, Owen Jenkins on Friday (12/4) regarding Benny Wenda. This call was made specifically by the Director General of America and Europe, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said the Foreign Ministry vigorously protested to Jenkins for allowing the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) president Benny Wenda to spread disinformation, slander, incite and direct various crimes and murders in Papua.

“The British ambassador promised to carry out the strong Indonesian protest. Ambassador Jenkins also emphasized the British government’s position on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Indonesia,” Faizasyah said in an official statement on Saturday (12/5).

This call came after Benny declared the independence of Papua and the formation of the Provisional Government of West Papua and at the same time declared its leader through the official ULMWP website.

In the statement, Benny said that his party would implement its own constitution and would not submit to the Indonesian government.

Meanwhile, the People’s Representative Council (DPR) and the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) condemned Benny’s move and urged the government to take concrete measures against the separatist act.

MPR President Bambang Soesatyo said that Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi really needed to summon the British ambassador to ask him to explain his position on Papua and Indonesia. He also asked Retno to present a diplomatic note to emphasize Indonesia’s position in Papua.

Benny Wenda is known to have been known as a pro-independence figure in Papua. He was arrested for participating in the independence rally in Papua and the raising of the Morning Star flag in 2002. However, Benny escaped from prison and has lived in England since 2003.

The government had attempted to extradite Benny to Indonesia by submitting a red notice to Interpol in 2011. However, Interpol revoked that status a year later.

Without remaining silent, Indonesia is said to continue to reach out to the British, especially the police, to help arrest Benny.

Until now, Britain has been considered silent regarding Benny’s citizen status. This is because Benny is said to have applied for political asylum in the Western European country.

Then, in 2019, Britain refused to reveal Benny’s citizenship status and did not respond whether his asylum application was accepted or not.
