The Israeli authorities have warned their citizens abroad to beware of Iran’s burning resentment. Iran has called for revenge for the death of a top nuclear scientist assassinated last week.
Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, an Iranian nuclear scientist, was killed in a bomb attack and armed attack on the streets of Tehran on Friday (11/27) last week. Iranian authorities blame Israel and its intelligence agency, Mossad, for being behind the killings. Iran has also vowed to avenge Fakhrizadeh’s death.
“In view of the recent threats from Iranian elements … we fear that Iran will attack Israeli targets,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement. AFP, Friday (12/4/2020).
Israel’s Foreign Ministry has warned that a possible attack could affect Israeli citizens in Africa and in countries geographically close to Iran, such as Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, the Kurdish region of Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain are known to have agreed to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel last September. Commercial flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv were restored late last month.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, who was scheduled to visit Bahrain over the weekend to attend a regional conference, canceled the visit after Iran blamed Israel for Fakhrizadeh’s death and threatened revenge.
Israeli authorities did not respond directly to Iran’s allegations. But Israel’s Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran on Thursday (3/12) local time of using the international nuclear deal to “expand” its influence in Iraq, Yemen and Syria. Netanyahu said the nuclear deal brought the ‘tigers’ out of their cage.
Furthermore, Israel’s National Security Council, which alluded to the attacks in France, Germany and Austria, said that global jihadist organizations, in particular the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group, had “shown great motivation to carry out terrorist attacks. “
“It is possible that part of the current wave of Islamist terrorism will reach targets identified as linked to Israel or the Jewish community, synagogues, kosher restaurants and Jewish museums,” read a warning from the National Security Council.
All Israeli travelers should also check warnings about the purpose of their trip.
