Semeru erupts, Pronojiwo Lumajang residents panic and flee

Residents panicked as Semeru erupted and sprayed volcanic ash and gravel

Pronojiwo – The highest mountain on the island of Java, Semeru, has increased its activity. In fact, residents of Supiturang Village, Pronojiwo district in the village closest to Semeru Peak were independently evacuated on Tuesday (01/12/2020)

The reason is that there was an eruption and an ash shower before dawn accompanied by quite dense gravel and the neighbors were concerned. Many residents were on the road, descending to an area further away from the slopes of Semeru.

Wawan Hadi Siswoyo, head of PKL at the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Lumajang Regency, confirmed that Semeru’s activity has increased. However, Wawan denied that Semeru had a major eruption.

“Yes, the residents carried out independent evacuations due to increased activity from Mount Semeru. The TRC team has already made their way to the site,” he explained.

Uun, a resident of Supiturang Village, Pronojiwo district, stated that Semeru removed the ashes. There was a sound like a very loud broken tire, when the neighbors came out the rainwater had changed color because it was mixed with volcanic ash.

“The inhabitants of Gumuk Mas Hamlet have evacuated, but the rain is thick ash and gravel,” he explained.

Karno, another Pronojiwo resident, also reported that the Mount Semeru eruption caused the rainwater to turn brown because it was mixed with volcanic ash. In the village closest to Semeru peak, there is also a smell of sulfur.

“Now in Pronojowo, residents are leaving their homes, residents are worried and evacuate independently,” he concluded. (Yd / red)
