KOMPAS.com – Ending November 2020, today’s moon (11/30/2020), will experience two interesting phenomena to observe, one of which is a lunar eclipse.

Based on information from the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (Lapan), the two celestial phenomena that will occur from noon to night are a partial twilight lunar eclipse and a full moon phase.

Today’s partial twilight lunar eclipse will begin from 2:29 p.m. WIB to 6:55 p.m. WIB, lasting 4 hours 25 minutes 52 seconds.

Indonesian regions such as North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua and Papua plus Timor Leste will be able to witness all phases of this eclipse, from the initial contact, peak of the lunar eclipse, to the final contact.

Meanwhile, the rest of Indonesia can only see the moon that is not completely shaded by twilight.

This is because the peak of the eclipse occurs before the moon rises. So generally this partial twilight lunar eclipse can be observed from the east-northeast direction.

Indonesian amateur astronomer Marufin Sudibyo explained that theoretically this penumbra lunar eclipse (GBP) can be observed from all regions of Indonesia when the moon begins to rise in the eastern sky.

“So the duration of the eclipse is relatively short,” Marufin said. Kompas.com, Saturday (10/31/2020).

However, Marufn said that this lunar eclipse is very difficult to distinguish from a normal full moon without using optical tools.

“With a telescope, we can only identify the part of the face of the moon that has darkened slightly due to the eclipse,” he explained.

2. Full moon phase

The peak of the full moon this time occurs on November 30, 2020, at 4:29 p.m. WIB, a few minutes before the peak of the partial twilight eclipse occurs.

For eastern Indonesia, the peak of the full moon will coincide with the rising of the moon. Meanwhile, for western and central Indonesia, the peak of the full moon occurs before it rises.

Then the moon will rise in the northeast, culminate in the north around midnight, and set the next day in the northwest.

The full moon this time is also called a frost full moon. This name is due to the fact that in this month, the frosts begin to form as a sign of the beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere.
