JAKARTAMinister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani Indrawati revealed the reason the government cut the license end of holidays 2020 this. The government also ensures that this decision is based on analysis and data related to the management of Covid-19 and the economic recovery.

One of the things that is taken into account are the results of the evaluation of the long holidays at the end of October 2020. Initially, long holidays can increase the activity and mobility of the community in a way that encourages consumption.

“But what we see now is that every time there is a long holiday, the number of Covid-19 cases increases but the economic indicators do not improve or in this case there is no consumption as we expected,” he said at a virtual press conference for our APBN, on Monday (11/23/2020).

Reflecting on this, he continued, the government applies the principle of prudence in the policy of holidays and departure at the end of 2020.

“We have to be careful to look at it. With long vacations, people get involved in high mobility activities but they do not cause expenses and even cause additional cases of Covid. That is what we must protect,” he said.

The Minister of Finance also explained that in October 2020, with the long weekend, the number of business days was only 19 days, although last October 2019 it reached 23 days.

With this short working day, the export-import activity in the port is also expected to be affected. In addition, the Minister said that, based on the October data, there was a decrease in electricity consumption in the business sector.

“When viewed from the October data, the number of business days has decreased, electricity consumption in the business sector and manufacturing has decreased, and this illustrates the impact of economic activity in the production sector as well. it has declined, (but) the consumer sector is not peaking, “he said.

He added that, for the month of December 2020, if the number of holidays and collective cancellations is not cut, then the number of business days will be only 16 days, less than December 2019, which was 20 business days.

“The fact is that we do politics not only from one side, but we have to look everywhere, starting with health, economy, business activities and others. This is what the president meant if the number of working days or long vacations in the Covid environment had no impact. We want the number of cases to increase, but in terms of the number of economic activities there is no increase ”, he explained.

In addition, the Finance Minister explained, the limitation for the consumption of the upper middle class is the confidence in the handling of the pandemic. The reason is that they focus on safety and health issues as priorities over purchasing power.

So, who want to carry out any activity, be it tourism or other things, as long as they are convinced that the prevention of Covid-19 or the protocol discipline is carried out so that transmission does not occur. Or, ideally, if the vaccine already exists, ”he said.

Earlier, the government decided to cut the end of 2020 holidays. In a closed-door meeting this morning, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called for this decision to be immediately coordinated with related ministries and institutions.
