Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Houthi rebel group in Yemen announced that it had fired missiles at a distribution station operated by the Saudi Arabian state oil company Saudi Aramco on Monday (11/23/2020).
The station is on the outskirts of Jeddah and a Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Sarea, said the attack was carried out with a Quds-2 type winged missile. It also posted a satellite image labeled ‘North Jeddah-Saudi Aramco Factory’ which is also said to match Google Maps.
“The attack was very accurate and an ambulance and a fire truck fired at the target,” Sarea said. Reuters.
There has been no direct confirmation from the Saudis of the claim. Aramco’s oil production and export facilities are primarily located in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia, more than 1,000 km across the country from Jeddah.
Yemen has been mired in conflict since the Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015. The Saudis and their allies secure a government overthrown by Houthi forces in late 2014.
Cross-border attacks by Houthi forces have increased since late May, when the ceasefire triggered by the new coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) ended. The Saudi-led coalition has responded with airstrikes in Houthi-controlled territory.
The Houthis control most of northern Yemen and most of the large urban areas. They say they are fighting a corrupt system.
Sarea said the attack was carried out in response to the actions of the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. Although there has been no immediate confirmation, the Saudis have warned foreign companies and residents of Arabia to be careful because “operations will continue.”
The Houthis themselves often identify with Saudi Arabia with the Iranian-backed militias. In September 2019, the Houthis also attacked two Aramco oil facilities, causing a disruption to the world’s oil supply.
