Jakarta –
Joan Mir has just become world champion in MotoGP 2020. Here is a short profile of the 23-year-old.
Joan Mir was born in Mallorca on September 1, 1997. He began his racing career by appearing in the 2013 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, an event that is known for producing talented young riders.
In the 2013 season, Mir finished ninth with 107 points. He went back to work there in 2014 and finished runner-up with 194 points. He also won three times.
In 2015, he moved on to the FIM CEV Moto3 Junior World Championship. In fact, he had time to participate in this event in 2013, but he only appeared in the Valencia series. In 2015, he participated for the entire season, earning four victories and finishing fourth in the final standings.
In that same year, he began to feel the atmosphere of Moto3 class racing. He appeared once with Leopard Racing, to be precise at the Australian GP, replacing the injured Hiroki Ono.
He couldn’t finish at the time, but his potential was seen in Moto3 Junior, prompting Leopard Racing to fully promote him to the Moto3 class in 2016.
Joan Mir competed in Moto3 for two seasons. In the inaugural season on a KTM motorcycle, Mir won once in 18 series and finished the 2016 season with 144 points and finished fifth in the final standings.

The following year, Mir finally felt the title of world champion. This time on a Honda motorcycle, he won 10 victories out of a total of 18 races, earning him the Moto3 title at the end of the 2017 season.
This achievement led to Mir being recruited by Marc VDS Racing Team to compete in Moto2 2018. He was given a three-year contract. In Moto2 2018, Mir did not even win, but managed to get on the podium 4 times out of 18 series.
At the time, he finished sixth in the drivers’ standings with 155 points, but Suzuki, who was looking for a replacement for Andrea Iannone, was apparently drawn to him. Mir finally made the move to MotoGP in 2019 and terminated his contract at Marc VDS.

In MotoGP 2019, Mir started a duet with Alex Rins, who had been drafted since 2017. In his inaugural season, Mir lost to other rookies, such as Fabio Quartararo. When the French rider managed to reach seven podiums, Mir completely failed.
He is ranked 12th in the final ranking and has only accumulated 92 points. His best achievement was finishing fifth in the Australian MotoGP. He also lost brilliantly to Rins, who finished fourth in the final standings with 205 points.
With what he accomplished in 2019, Mir is clearly not the favorite in MotoGP 2020. Especially in the first three races, he crashed twice. Compare with Quartararo who won two victories.
But who would have thought, Mir was able to appear consistently from the fourth series, that is, the Austrian MotoGP. He won the first podium of his career in MotoGP by finishing second. After that, no one could match Mir’s consistency.
When names like Quartararo, Maverick Vinales, Andrea Dovizioso and Franco Morbidelli fluctuate in performance, this is not the case for Mir. In total, he was able to get on the podium seven times out of 13 series, one of which was the winner (European MotoGP).
And at Valencia MotoGP, on Sunday (11/15/2020), Mir was rewarded for his consistency, specifically the 2020 MotoGP world title. The seventh final was enough to lead Mir to become champion with 171 points in the absence of one Serie.
Joan Mir is also the sixth rider to win the title since the MotoGP era in 2002, after Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Márquez.
