8.9-magnitude earthquake accompanied by a 10-meter tsunami in the city of Padang, experts reveal details of the cause

DIARY – The Regional Agency for Disaster Management (BPBD) West Sumatra (West Sumatra) again recalled the potential of a large earthquake of 8.9 magnitude to cause a tsunami of up to 10 meters along 5 kilometers in the city of Padang .

However, this is not intended to make people panic, but rather to remind them of the need to be prepared for the potential earthquakes and tsunamis that can strike at any moment.

This was relayed by West Sumatra BPBD PK Prevention and Preparedness Division Chief Syahrazad Jamil at the Tsunami Awareness Day webinar held on Friday, November 13, 2020.

Jamil detailed that in the case of the Mentawai Megathrust fault, which resulted in an 8.9-magnitude earthquake and a tsunami. According to him, after the great earthquake occurred, a tsunami would immediately follow.

“20 to 30 minutes later, the tsunami wave in Padang city reached a height of six to 10 meters with a distance of two to five kilometers,” Jamil said.

He said the natural disaster was expected to impact at least 1.3 million people. In the worst case, an estimated 39,321 people died, 52,367 disappeared and 103,225 were injured.

“Teluk Bayur port and Minangkabau airport are destroyed, that is the prediction of the experts,” he said.

Previously, University of Andalas (Unand) earthquake expert Padang Badrul Mustafa Phd reminded West Sumatra residents to be aware of possible earthquakes originating from the Siberut segment.
