Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Joint investigation Greenpeace International with Forensic Architecture finding allegations that a South Korean subsidiary, Korindo Group in Papua burning of forests in that province for the purpose of the oil palm plantation business.

However, the Korindo Group denied Greenpeace’s findings. The company claims that the information that the Korindo Group is burning forests in Papua for oil palm plantations is not true.

Citing a statement from the Greenpeace website, the Korindo company has the largest oil palm plantation in Papua and has destroyed around 57,000 hectares of forest in the province since 2001.

“An area almost as large as Seoul, the capital of South Korea,” said a statement on the Greenpeace website accessed on Friday (11/13).

In the research, a joint team of two organizations used NASA satellite images to identify the heat source from the ground fires located in Merauke, Papua.

In addition, they used data collected from aerial survey videotapes. Through this method, the research team found patterns of deforestation and fires that show that the land clearing used fire.

“If the fires in the Korindo concession were to occur naturally, the damage to the land would be patchy,” said Forensic Architecture senior researcher Samaneh Moafy. “However, tracking the movement of deforestation and fires over time shows that it is clearly occurring sequentially with fires that follow the direction of land clearing from west to east and occur massively within the boundaries of the concession. of Korindo “.

Citing the Forensic Architecture website, the concession was followed up by PT Dongin Parabhawa, a Korindo subsidiary operating in the Merauke, Papua area. They watched the video when the fire broke out there.

To determine the geographic location and source of fire in the fires, they used a major spatial system that could display a road network.

An analysis technique called Normal Combustion Ratio (NBR) was used to find the pattern of combustion in the area. From there, a pattern of clearing was found with fires that occur monthly between October 2011 and January 2016.

Then the data found is compared with the data hotspot in the same VIIRS and NASA MODIS satellite data area in the same period.

Comparison of the two data shows the similarity of fire patterns, direction and speed of fire movement. From this, it can be assumed that the fire was started on purpose to clear the land.

The fire data on the land is even compared to other corporate plantations, namely PT Internusa Jaya Sejahtera. Forensic Architecture said the fire pattern at PT Dongin Parabhawa was more frequent and stronger.

And judging from the satellite imagery captures across Merauke, they said the Korindo concession was the hottest area monitored from 2012 to 2015.

The head of Greenpeace’s Southeast Asia Forestry Campaign, Kiki Taufik, assessed that the government should hold Korindo responsible for this discovery.

“But the problem is that the government’s track record in applying the law is weak and inconsistent, especially now that environmental protection regulations have been weakened following the enactment of the pro-business Employment Creation Act rather than issues. environmental, “he said.

The director general of Law Enforcement of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Rasio Ridho Sani, emphasized that his party pays attention to this case.

Even so, his party had yet to confirm the truth of this matter. He is still studying and deepening the accusations.

“Yes, but you have to check if it’s true. In what year [terjadinya], “he said CNNIndonesia.com by phone.

“That video also shows what year it is. It was 2013, how is it new? [dilaporkan] now, “he continued.

Furthermore, in a statement received from Gakkum’s General Directorate, KLHK, Ridho said that Greenpeace should immediately report the 2013 video evidence to related parties at that time.

He also claimed that if Greenpeace had evidence of such an incident, he suggested, it was best to report the findings immediately so they could be followed up immediately. He assured that the General Directorate of Gakkum KLHK will take firm measures against companies from any country that violates it.

Korindo Declaration

Meanwhile, Grupo Korindo denied the results of the Greenpeace investigation with Forensic Architecture.

“The conclusion of the investigation establishes that the accusation that Korindo intentionally and illegally burned plantation areas is false,” said the official statement received by Korindo Group. CNNIndonesia.com.

Korindo’s official statement has been confirmed by the Head of Corporate Communication of the Korindo Suharsono Group to CNNIndonesia.com.

“We want to emphasize that the Korindo Group is a company that has been established in Indonesia since 1969 and has constantly contributed to helping the development and progress of the Indonesian people, especially in the Papua region,” Korindo wrote.

Regarding the reports of forest burning in the period 2011-2016, Korindo compared this with the findings of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in August 2019, which indicated that the FSC had conducted field investigations in December 2017.

The FSC findings concluded that it was not true that Korindo had deliberately and illegally burned its plantation areas.

The FSC findings reinforce the results of an investigation previously carried out by the Merauke Regency Forestry and Plantations Service under letter number 522.2 / 0983 of August 24, 2016, which states that clearing is done mechanically and without burning. .

In addition to these two investigations, there is also a letter from the General Directorate of Environmental and Forest Law Enforcement, Ministry of LHK RI Number S.43 / PHLHK / PPH / GKM.2 / 2/2017 dated February 17, 2017 which indicates that a subsidiary of Grupo Korindo is contracted in the oil palm plantation sector, does not carry out illegal deforestation and has obtained a forest release permit from the Ministry of the Environment and Forests.
