The fanaticism of Rizieq supporters is behind the paralysis of the Soetta airport

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng, Tangerang paralyzed on Tuesday (11/10) ahead of the FPI leader, Muhammad Rizieq Shihab. Part of the public was shocked by the reason why thousands of people had come since Monday (September 11) to witness the arrival of a leader of an Islamic mass organization.

All entrances to Soetta airport have been closed since Monday night (9/11). Crowds from various regions that were about to pick up Rizieq were stopped on various roads leading to the airport.

In the morning, the access is still closed. Motorized vehicles cannot enter the airport area. Rizieq’s followers don’t make sense. They walk 5 to 10 kilometers to get to the airport.

Palmerah resident Wahidin is willing to walk about 5 kilometers from the morning. He left his motorcycle on the side of the road. There’s only one goal: to see Rizieq Shihab come.

Another supporter, Yusuf, has been willing to come from Sukabumi since Monday (September 11). He even spent the night in the car, on the side of the road, so as not to be late to pick up Rizieq.

At the international arrival gate of Terminal 3 at Soetta Airport, the crowd had been gathering since morning. Thousands of people crowded around the exit. Directives from the security forces were ignored.

Around 09.30 WIB, Sang Habib appeared. The masses struggled to get closer, they just wanted to wave and kiss his hands. Some shed tears at Rizieq’s presence after 3 years apart.

LIPI social researcher Amin Mudzakkir argues that the action of Rizieq supporters at Soetta airport was motivated by fanaticism. The congregation poured out their great love for their lord, Rizieq.

That fanaticism, Amin said, has been building for a long time. However, the story of Rizieq’s “exile” in Saudi Arabia sparked this fanaticism.

“After I was almost three years old exiled (exiled) in Saudi Arabia, the love of his followers will multiply. Furthermore, it was imbued with various kinds of myths or messages as if it had been deliberately taken from Indonesia, “Amin said. CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (11/10).

Amin considered that the figure of Rizieq was attached to his followers because it broke the old standard of hadrami or Arab ancestry. The Hadrami, especially the Sayyids or descendants of Rasulallah SAW, often focus on participating in the religious field.

Rizieq is different by adding an emphasis on the political side of Islam. He often participates in electoral moments, for example, in the 2014 elections, the 2017 DKI regional elections and the 2019 elections.

“Habib Rizieq is able to respond with a unique, aggressive, sharp character. For some people who have some kind of dissatisfaction, they can find a channel through Habib Rizieq,” said Amin.

Contacted separately, LIPI sociology research professor Endang Turmudzi saw that bigotry arose because Rizieq was able to respond to the needs of some Muslims for a lord.

Endang said that existing figures, including Islamic political parties, considered themselves unable to fight the Muslim unrest. Meanwhile, charismatic scholars like Rizieq emerged and were seen as pure circles.

“Our Muslims still rely on charisma. So if there are people who are charismatic, they will follow orders,” Endang said. CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (11/10).

The fall of Ahok, the resurrection of Rizieq

Amin also explained that the fanaticism for Rizieq cannot be separated from the electoral process and the polarization that is developing in Indonesia. Rizieq’s progress began to escalate at least in the 2014 presidential elections, when religious polarization strengthened.

Three years later, there was the DKI Pilkada 2017 that was also full of identity politics. Rizieq played an important role in the political battle.

“The overthrow of Ahok, 212. Obviously he was the key figure,” Amin said.

According to Amin, Endang also called the 2017 DKI Regional Election Rizieq’s golden moment. He said that at that time the spirit of Islam, at least in Jakarta, was at its peak.

Rizieq is present as a recognized leader of Islamic mass organizations in DKI, the Islamic Defenders Front.

Then he learned about the moment of the DKI Regional Elections that was marked by the action of the SARA incumbent, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok. Fanaticism also flourishes.

“HRS managed to establish itself as an academic who promised or carried the spirit of Islam before, to fight for their (supporters) hopes,” Endang said.
