A Russian military helicopter crashes after flying over Armenia near the border with Azerbaijan. The helicopter was the victim of “wrong firing” by Azerbaijani troops.

This incident occurred on Monday (September 11) local time and killed two crew members inside. Azerbaijan, which admitted to shooting down the Russian helicopter, also apologized.

Reported AFPOn Tuesday (11/10/2020), the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Mi-24 helicopter was hit by a portable air defense system near the border with Azerbaijan, whose forces are fighting against Armenian-backed separatists in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Two crew members of the military helicopter died. Another person was injured and evacuated, the ministry said in a statement.

The statement explained that the helicopter was shot down near the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, a separate territory under Azerbaijan.

The ministry also said that the helicopter was shot down near the village of Yeraskh, around 14:30 GMT, while accompanying a convoy from a Russian military base in Armenia.

Russia is conducting an investigation. Armenian authorities said the Russian helicopter crashed “into a ravine” near the village of Yeraskh.
