Joan Mir is one step away from becoming world champion in MotoGP 2020. Still, the Spanish rider resists being careless because there are still two races to go.

In the European MotoGP series that took place at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia, on Sunday (8/11/2020), Mir finally achieved his first victory and the seventh podium this season. He finished with a record time of 41 minutes 37.297 seconds.

Of the 12 series that have been held, I has gained 162 points. The Suzuki Ecstar rider is comfortable at the top of the drivers’ standings this season, because he is 37 points away from second and third place, namely Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) and his own teammate Alex Rins.

With two races to go, mathematically Mir has a chance to secure this year’s Valencia MotoGP title next week, which will be held at the same circuit. If he manages to finish in at least the top three positions, then world champion status will certainly be attributed to him.

Still, Mir was reluctant to puff up his chest. The 23-year-old realized that he still had to finish his job, making sure no one at the top was chasing him.

“Now we have to be smarter. Because we have a good advantage in terms of points, really good, but not everything is over,” Mir said at a press conference after the race, as relayed on the official MotoGP Twitter account.

“We have to take advantage of these points in a good way. The next race will be very crucial, we understand that. We are in a good position because our bike is doing well.”

“Maybe if I feel the same as today, I will also fight for the victory. But if the opposite happens, hopefully not, we will see what I can do.”

“I always give 100 percent and then we will see where we are,” explained Joan Mir, about the possibility of becoming MotoGP champion in 2020.
