Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The people of the United States (USA) now have a new president and vice president after almost a week of counting the ballots. They are Joe Biden and his partner, Kamala Harris.
Democrat Joe and Harris won the US presidential election (Pilpres), beating incumbents Donald John Trump and Republican Michael Richard Pence by 290 to 214 electoral votes (electoral votes) on Sunday (11/8/2020) in the morning.
So who is Joe Biden?
Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. or commonly known as Joe Biden is a politician who served as the 47th Vice President of the USA in the 44th presidential administration of Barack Hussein Obama II from 2009 to 2017.
The man who was born in the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania on November 20, 1942, is also a member of the Democratic Party, who served as a United States Senator from Delaware from 1973 to 2009. For the record, in Pennsylvania, Biden also narrowly beat Trump.
Not only being a presidential candidate in 2020, Biden, now 77, also represented the Democratic Party for president in 1988 and 2008.
According to the New York Times, Biden has worked in public life for about half a century, emphasizing his experience in government and always trying to position himself as someone with experience in a dangerous and uncertain world.
When the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak occurred, Biden quickly made recommendations based on the advice of experts in health and economics. That advice includes making testing for the coronavirus widely accessible and free.
He said there should be no cost to patients for getting the vaccine. He has also been highly critical of President Trump’s response in dealing with the coronavirus, saying that Trump has reacted too slowly to the crisis.
Biden also served as vice president of the Obama administration during the passage of the Affordable Care Act, and health care remains a priority for him, The New York Times reported.
There’s a personal reason he takes public health so seriously: Biden lost his first wife Neilia Hunter and their young daughter, Naomi, in a car accident in 1972, and in 2015, his son Beau Biden died of brain cancer. .
Health care, he said in television commercials, was “personal” to him. He supports adding a public option to the Affordable Care Act, but opposes “Medicare for All,” the single-payer measure championed by several progressives in his party, including Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Biden, who served for decades in the Senate, firmly believed in bipartisan values and insisted on extending the offer to the Republican Party even when many in his own party did not see a negotiating partner in the other.
As a former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he also speaks passionately about affirming and maintaining America’s role as a leader on the world stage.
With this victory, Biden will be the oldest president of the United States in history at his inauguration, at the age of 78.
He beat Trump, currently 74, and will be the oldest president if he wins a second term.
