US presidential election: Trump sues 3 states and asks to stop the counting of votes

WASHINGTON DC, KOMPAS.com – The campaign team of the current president of the United States, Donald Trump, has filed lawsuits in three states that are battlegrounds for the two candidates, namely Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia.

The lawsuit was filed to start a legal battle to decide the winner of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

The Trump camp has demanded that the vote count be suspended in Michigan. He claims that he has not been granted “adequate access” to the place where the ballots are processed.

Trump’s Democratic rival Joe Biden has sealed victory in Michigan state, reportedly Associated Press and other American media.

Thus, Biden only needed 6 more electoral votes to reach 270 electoral votes, the total of votes required for candidates to reach the White House.

Meanwhile, outside the TCF Center, which is the site for the counting of votes in Detroit, Michigan, Trump supporters called for the counting of votes to be stopped. “Stop counting,” Trump supporters shouted over and over again.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson called Trump’s demands to end the state’s counting of votes “reckless,” according to Reuters.

He then ensured that all valid Michigan ballots were accurately and safely tabulated.

The Trump camp also filed a lawsuit to freeze the vote count in Pennsylvania.

Trump requested the Supreme Court to intervene to exclude the postal processing of ballots that arrive beyond the closing day of the voting stations. In fact, state law allows ballots to be counted.

The election result in Pennsylvania is not yet finalized on Wednesday (11/4/2020), as a large number of mail-in ballots are still being counted.

Pennsylvania received 3.1 million votes by mail. State law allows ballots to be counted if they are postmarked by November 3 and received by Friday.

Not only that, the Trump camp also filed a lawsuit against the state of Pennsylvania, claiming that extending the voter identification deadline was a violation of state law.

Trump actually led the vote in Pennsylvania, but his lead narrowed when the postal ballots were counted.

Across the United States, Trump, on average, does better by voting directly on Election Day than by voting by mail.

The Trump camp and Georgia state Republicans also said they planned to sue dozens of territories in the state, demanding that vote counting be stopped.

The lawsuit alleges that a team of Republican observers in one of the regions had witnessed polling station officials take raw ballots from behind and mixed them into ballots that had been processed for tabulation.

In tentative earnings, Trump has a narrow lead against Biden in Georgia, although an official winner in that state has yet to be predicted. Ballots in several major regions leaning toward Democrats have yet to be counted.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said he expected the election results to come out late Wednesday (11/4/2020).

Under Georgia state law, a request for a recount can be filed two days after the official result, and if the margin between the votes acquired by the two candidates is equal to or less than 0.5 percent.

A count in Wisconsin?

The Trump camp has called for a recount in Wisconsin, a state won by Biden. They claimed there were “irregularities in some areas,” without specifying the details.

Of the 99 percent of the votes counted in Wisconsin, Biden is ahead of Trump by more than 20,000.

Since the voting margin between the incumbent president and his rival in Wisconsin was less than 1 percent, he reached the legal threshold for the recount.

Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are three states that Democrats have dubbed the “blue wall.”

Democrats can often count on these three states for electoral votes in every election in four years. However, in 2016 they lost to Trump.

Projections in Michigan and Wisconsin suggest that Biden will win back the state for the Democrats.

Trump made unsubstantiated claims that were unprecedented. He claims to have won in states where Biden actually won, or won in states that are still counting.

Biden said in a speech to his supporters that vote counting should continue in all states.

“No one can take away our democracy, not now, not forever,” he said on Wednesday (03/11/2020).

Election officials continue to count votes in the United States, which generally end on Election Day.

However, the election this time is different because there are states that have to deal with a series of mail ballots made due to the corona virus pandemic.
