Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A series of riots was reported after voting in the United States (US) presidential elections. Riots were reported in several states in Uncle Sam’s country following a peaceful demonstration that occurred as a result of the vote counting controversy.
In New York, as reported by ABC7 News, the police have arrested 50 people suspected of being the perpetrators of the riot. The riots came after the stronghold of supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, who were waiting for the count to continue, demonstrated outside the office of incumbent Donald Trump’s winning team on Washington Park Avenue.
The rally was initially peaceful, but after an hour was up, there were reports of riots on Leroy Street and 7th Avenue in Greenwich Village, New York. In addition to arresting the 50 perpetrators, several sharp weapons and fireworks were also seized. Currently, the police are preparing new ways to deal with protesters peacefully.
Meanwhile, in Portland, Oregon, riots were also reported. Quoted from AFP, the masses that began to turn violent after the peaceful demonstration threw stones, glass bottles and Molotov cocktails at the police.
So far, the police have secured 10 people along with evidence of sharpened weapons and Molotovs. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has deployed the National Guard to deal with unrest that she believes could spread across the state.
In addition to New York and Portland, riots were also reported in Missouri, Denver, Detroit, and Los Angeles. The protesters were in conflict over controversy over whether the vote counting should continue or not. The Pro Trump field called for the counting to be stopped, while Biden’s supporters felt that every vote was significant, so the count had to continue.
Trump’s winning team recently decided to bring the issue of the counting of votes in Pennsylvania and Michigan into law. If this demand is followed up, then the results of the US elections have the potential to come out in the long term.
