The author of the shooting against a priest in an Orthodox church, the city of Lyon, France was arrested. The perpetrator was not carrying a weapon when he was arrested.

“A person who may match the description provided by the initial witness has been taken into political custody,” Lyon prosecutor Nicolas Jacquet said in a statement.

The arrest of the shooter took place on Saturday (10/31), still on the same day that the shooting took place. The motive for the attack was not yet known. Authorities are still investigating.

Earlier, a priest of an Orthodox church, Nikolaos Kakavelaki, (52) was shot by an unknown person. When the incident happened, he was in the middle of closing the church.

The priest was shot twice in the chest at point-blank range, according to sources close to the investigation. Witnesses heard gunshots and then “saw someone flee and found a man with a gunshot wound at the back door of the church,” the Lyon prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The Interior Ministry said that “security and emergency personnel were on the scene,” warning people to avoid the area where the attack occurred.
