Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – French President Emmanuel Macron spoke about his statement, which was seen as insulting to Islam and hurting its people.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera, and as reported Bloomberg, Saturday (10/31/2020), Macron admitted that he understood the feelings of Muslims about the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad.

He also confirmed that his statement had been twisted to appear to support the cartoon.

Al-Jazeera reported that Macron said that most of the victims of terrorism were Muslims. The act of terror committed in the name of religion also damaged the image of Islam.

The French government under Macron’s leadership has vowed to crack down on radicals amid relentless Muslim protests over the publication of cartoons deemed offensive.

As is known, in the last two weeks there have been two brutal attacks in France, specifically in the cities of Paris and Nice. The attack in the French capital happened to a teacher named Samuel Paty.

He was beheaded after showing cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad in the 2015 Charlie Hebdo magazine to his students in class. Samuel said that making or reproducing images of God or the Prophet is not allowed in Islam and is considered blasphemy.

The perpetrator of the beheading was his student, an 18-year-old Czech teenager. He admitted that he did this because the teacher showed him cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad while teaching a class on freedom of expression.

About two weeks after the Paty tragedy, a man attacked a church in Nice, France with a knife and killed three people on Thursday (10/29/2020). One of the victims was a woman whose head was nearly cut off.

According to the police, the alleged attacker was a 21-year-old Tunisian who had recently arrived in Europe. The suspect has Italian Red Cross documents released after his arrival.

President Emmanuel Macron said the stabbing was a terrorist attack by an Islamist group. Speaking after visiting Nice, Macron said that the attacks in his country were due to the values that France has, namely freedom and the opportunity to have free faith and not give in to terror.

Meanwhile, at Paty’s funeral last week, President Macron defended Charlie Hebdo. He said France would not blame the magazine’s cartoons.
