The earthquake vibrated in Greece. Many buildings collapsed in the coastal Izmir province and people were trapped in the rubble.
Witnesses said that people crowded the streets of the city of Izmir.
The tremors could even be felt in Istanbul and the Greek islands, where, according to officials, people are panicking, but there have been no reports of casualties so far.
There have been several reports of property damage. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said six buildings collapsed in two districts of the coastal city of Izmir.
Meanwhile, Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum said that five buildings collapsed in the area, adding that several people were trapped in the rubble. Izmir Mayor Tunc Soyer said nearly 20 buildings had collapsed in the province.
In a tweet on Twitter, Soylu said there were no reports of casualties from the other six provinces, where the earthquake was also felt. But he added that there were a number of small cracks in some buildings.
Ilke Cide, a PhD student who was in the Guzelbahce area of Izmir when the earthquake struck, said he left the beach after the water rose after the earthquake.
“I’m very used to earthquakes … so I wasn’t that worried at first, but this time it was really terrible,” he said. He added that the earthquake lasted 25 to 30 seconds.
