Smyrna –
Efforts continue to search for victims due to a magnitude 7 earthquake in Turkey and Greece. So far, 14 people have been declared dead.
As reported by AFP, on Saturday (10/31/2020), the rescue team continues to excavate the concrete that collapsed in the earthquake with their bare hands in search of survivors. To date, a total of 14 people have died in Turkey and Greece.
Not only victims, the earthquake also injured almost 257 people. Rescue operations continue and several people have been evacuated.
In addition to the collapse of buildings, the earthquake also caused a small tsunami on the Aegean island of Samos. Sea waves are also turning roads into mighty rivers in a city on Turkey’s west coast.
Most of the damage from the earthquake occurred around the Aegean city of Izmir, Turkey. The city is reported to have three million residents and is filled with high-rise apartment blocks.
Meanwhile, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after the earthquake. Greece and Turkey have been in conflict in recent months due to tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. But this time both countries suffered damage from the earthquake.
“I just called the president (Erdogan) to send my condolences for the tragic loss of life as a result of the earthquake that hit our two countries,” Mitsotakis said on his official Twitter account.
“Whatever our differences, these are times when our people need to be united,” he explained.
