Turkey-Greece hit by M 7 earthquake, seawater enters the coastal city of Izmir

ISTANBUL, KOMPAS.com – A magnitude 7 earthquake struck off the western coast of Turkey on Friday (10/30/2020), according to the US Geological Survey.

Initial reports indicated damage to buildings but no casualties.

The USGS said the quake struck 14 kilometers from the Greek city of Neon Karlovasion on the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea.

Meanwhile, the Turkish government’s disaster agency AFAD reported a smaller magnitude of the earthquake, that is, a magnitude of 6.6 at a depth of 16.5 km.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tweeted that he was ready to help “with all means available to our country.”

So far no fatalities have been reported, and Turkey and Greece are reporting aftershocks.

In 1999, an M 7.4 earthquake struck northwestern Turkey, killing more than 17,000 people, including 1,000 in Istanbul.

Then the 2011 earthquake in Van province killed more than 600 people.
