Indonesia through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the statement of the President French, Emmanuel macron, which is considered to have offended Muslims.
“Indonesia condemns the French president’s statement that he does not respect Islam and the Muslim community around the world. This statement offends more than 2 billion Muslims around the world and triggers divisions of various religions in the world,” said a statement. from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Friday (10/30).
The Foreign Ministry also stressed that freedom of expression should not tarnish honor, chastity, and religious symbols.
“As a country with the largest Muslim population and the third largest democracy in the world, Indonesia urges the world community to prioritize religious unity and tolerance, especially amid the ongoing pandemic,” the Foreign Ministry wrote through from their official website.
Macron came into the limelight after claiming that he did not ban Charlie Hebdo from publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. He also said that Islam is “a religion that is experiencing a world crisis.”
Macron made this statement in response to the beheading of a teacher discussing the cartoons of the Prophet in Charlie Hebdo, Samuel Paty (47), in Eragny, by an immigrant from Chechnya, Abdoullakh Abouyezidovitch (18).
“Secularism is the union of French unity. Let us not fall into the trap set by extremist groups, who seek to stigmatize all Muslims,” Macron said.
The Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, Fachrul Razi, also strongly criticized the statement. He judged that Macron’s words hurt people’s feelings by insulting the symbols of Islam.
According to him, freedom of opinion should not go beyond the limits to damage the honor, sanctity and sacredness of the values and symbols of any religion.
“Insulting a religious symbol is a criminal act. The perpetrator must be responsible for his acts and be treated in accordance with the provisions of the law,” said Fachrul in his official statement on Thursday (10/29).
He supported the attitude of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry which summoned the French ambassador and criticized Macron’s statement, which was considered insulting to Islam.
However, Fachrul appealed to Muslims in Indonesia not to be provoked into anarchist action in response to Macron’s statement.
It reminds Islamic teachings that they should not allow the act of playing judge itself, especially when committing murder. According to him, Islam is a religion that defends the values of humanity.
Not just Indonesia, several other parties also criticized Macron’s statement. Some parties even called for a boycott of French products.
