José Mourinho complained after Tottenham Hotspur defeated Antwerp in the Europa League. He admitted he made a mistake lowering the starter.

Mourinho made nine changes to the Tottenham starter when he traveled to Antwerp on Friday (10/30/2020) WIB early in the morning, compared to the previous game against Burnley. But after the match that ended in a 0-1 loss, Mourinho immediately exploded.

He mentioned several players who were given the opportunity to blow their chances. Dele Alli is believed to be one of the players who disappointed Mourinho, while the Portuguese manager refused to give direct names.

The 24-year-old midfielder was substituted at half-time, alongside Steven Bergwijn, Carlos Vinicius and Giovani Lo Celso. So far, Alli has only been entrusted three times to start in all competitions and has retired twice in rounds.

Mourinho made his last change in the 58th minute to remove a Gareth Bale who still looked disappointed. But even the entry of Harry Kane could not make Tottenham save the match.

Mourinho admits that if he could replace all of his players, he probably would.

“I wanted to make 11 substitutions! I didn’t make five immediate changes because I was afraid it would be 45 minutes. There is only one person to blame, that’s me. I chose the players to start the game,” he said. Sky sports.

“In the change of round, I tried to improve the situation but it was not enough. The dynamics of the match in the first half was there, it is difficult to change. Antwerp has also changed,” he added.

One thing that really disappointed Mourinho was how his players failed to maximize the gaps they opened in the first half. When changes are made at halftime, the flow of the match has changed.

“In the first half it was very easy to play with a lot of space between the lines to punish them, which we didn’t do. In the second half we improved, but they played differently, they limited the distance,” he continued.

“It was a very difficult match. In the end, Antwerp got what they deserved. I’m fine with this. The best teams won and the worst teams on the pitch lost,” Mourinho said.
