Three people were killed and at least one was injured in the stabbing in Nice, according to French police.
Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said all the evidence suggests that the incident was a “terrorist attack in the heart of the Notre-Dame basilica.”
One victim, an elderly citizen, who came to the basilica to worship “was almost beheaded.”
Estrosi called the perpetrator “Islamist fascism” and the suspect repeatedly said “Allahu Akbar (God is great).
Counterterrorism prosecutors have launched a murder investigation.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin asked citizens to avoid downtown areas.
Gérald Darmanin said he held an emergency meeting in Paris.
According to French media reports, a man and a woman were killed in the attack and the suspect was detained 10 minutes after the incident before being transferred to hospital.
There was a minute’s silence in the National Assembly, amid Prime Minister Jean Castex’s announcement on details of the shutdown that will take effect on Thursday night (10/29).
“Without a doubt, this incident is a very serious new challenge that is hitting our country,” he said, calling for unity.
