The King of Malaysia or Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah will hold a special meeting today. The meeting with members of the Government of Malaysia to discuss Prime Minister (PM) Muhyiddin Yassin’s request on the state of emergency.
Reported Reuters Y The Strait TimesOn Sunday (10/25/2020), the special session will be held at the State Palace. Sultan Abdullah is scheduled to meet another high ranking member of the Kingdom called the Governing Council at 2.30pm local time and will be informal without the presence of Malaysian politicians.
It is also reported that Sultan Abdullah has issued his decision on the emergency situation requested by Prime Minister Muhyiddin after the meeting. Currently, the media team has been waiting outside the State Palace since 10:00 local time.
Earlier on Saturday, the State Palace said the king would consult other rulers on Muhyiddin’s proposal. However, the Palace did not identify what the proposal was.
Under the Malaysian Constitution, a king can establish an emergency period if he considers that there is a threat to national security, the economy or public order. Malaysia last declared a state of national emergency in 1969 after civil unrest and racial clashes.
To be known, the Prime Minister (PM) of Malaysia, Muhyiddin Yassin, met with the King of Malaysia or Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah on Friday (10/23). During the meeting, Prime Minister Muhyiddin asked Sultan Abdullah to establish an emergency situation in Malaysia.
As reported by Reuters on Friday (10/23/2020), this information was transmitted by two sources who were directly aware of Prime Minister Muhyiddin’s meeting with Sultan Abdullah.
According to one of the sources, the proposed emergency period would include a suspension of parliament, which is scheduled to start a new session in November. The two sources, who could not be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media, did not mention the reasons why PM Muhyiddin made this proposal.
