Medan, CNN Indonesia –
Hundreds of tons nila fish in floating net cages (KJA) Lake Toba Samosir Regency, North Sumatra, died suddenly on Friday (10/23). Temporary suspicions that the fish died due to high winds and too shallow water.
“Because the water is too shallow, yesterday there was a strong wind that caused the water to turn downward, the dirt under the cage rose, so the fish in the cage could not breathe, because they lacked oxygen” said Samosir Regency Chief of Agriculture and Fisheries Service Vicktor. Sitinjak.
Vicktor said that from the results of the interim data collection, the amount of fish that had died was around 109 tonnes, with 39 households (KK) owning. Most of the dead cages are in Siogung-ogung village, Pangururan district.
“The fish began to die on Thursday (10/23). The provisional estimates are due to climatic factors,” he said.
Vicktor said the dead fish were immediately buried in the Huta Tinggi district. Because it is feared that the fish carcass gives off a bad smell.
“The fish that die according to the coordination with the Head of the Pangururan Sub-district will be buried in the Upper Forest. This is looking for a solution when they are transported in trucks so that they are covered with plastic so that the water that carries the rotten fish does not spread on the road and do not cause a bad smell, “he explained.
According to Vicktor, this is not the first time this has happened. Because something similar happened last year, to be precise at the border of Dairi Regency and Samosir Regency.
“So it’s not because it’s contaminated with disease or something. Not because the water is spinning, it rises up so that the fish can’t breathe,” he said.
He said that to prevent a similar incident from happening again, the fish that were still living in the cage would be moved to the middle of the lake where the water was deeper.
“So even if it turns at the bottom, it doesn’t go to the top,” he said.
