A volunteer for AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial in Brazil has died. This information was relayed by local officials on Wednesday (10/21/2020).

Previously, AstraZeneca’s phase 3 clinical trial of the COVID-19 vaccine had been stopped after a volunteer in England sustained a spinal injury. However, these clinical trials have now resumed in the UK and Brazil.

Regarding this, here is a series of data on volunteers from AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial in Brazil who died.

1. Called placebo receptor

According to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, the volunteers who died were not recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine, but rather placebo recipients.

Placebo is a drug term made without chemicals or commonly referred to as empty drugs. Placebos are commonly used in research such as vaccine clinical trials.

When conducting vaccine clinical trials, volunteers will be divided into two groups, namely, groups of vaccine recipients and placebo recipients. This is done to make the results of clinical trials more objective and unbiased. Clinical trial volunteers will not be told which group to join.

“For example, there are 100 people who will receive a placebo or the real drug, nobody knows. Researchers and volunteers should not know,” said the director of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology (LBME), Professor Amin Soebandrio.

2. A doctor

Brazilian local media said that the volunteer for the clinical trial of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine who died was a doctor named Dr. João Pedro Feitosa (28). Feitosa was said to be a physician in charge of treating COVID-19 patients.

Quoted from Mirror UK, the young doctor living in Rio de Janeiro just graduated. He reportedly died of complications from COVID-19 while volunteering for the AstraZeneca vaccine.

However, so far it is not known with certainty how he contracted COVID-19. Feitosa was said to have died after receiving a placebo and not receiving the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

3. Clinical trials continue

A spokesperson for AstraZeneca said it could not comment on Feitosa’s death. This is due to confidentiality requirements and regulations in clinical trials.

Furthermore, he stated that there was no concern that AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial would be temporarily suspended.

“We can confirm that all necessary review processes have been followed,” said AstraZeneca spokesperson Brendan McEvoy.

“All major medical events are carefully evaluated by trial investigators, independent safety monitoring committees, and authorities. This evaluation does not raise concerns about the continuation of the ongoing study,” he continued.
