Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Recently, China was hit by an outbreak called Norovirus. It turns out that this virus is also found in Indonesia. These are the symptoms and how to prevent them.

China reports that norovirus attacked 70 students at Shanxi University. This incident was known on October 7. The disease control and prevention department in Taiyuan, which took 28 case samples for testing for norovirus, said 11 of them tested positive.

The dean of the University of Indonesia (UI) Medical School, Dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, said that this virus is not actually a new virus. Norovirus is one of the leading causes of acute intestinal infections (gastroenteritis) worldwide.

Professor Ari revealed that this virus has also started to appear in Indonesia. One of them was reported by Indonesian researchers in the Journal of Medical Virology in May 2020. The study showed that of the 91 stool samples examined, 14 samples or 15.4% contained norovirus.

“Research samples conducted in early 2019 were taken from various hospitals in Jambi city. The same case has also been reported in various cities in Indonesia,” Professor Ari said in an official statement on Tuesday (10/20 / 2020).

Mode of transmission and symptoms

Professor Ari revealed that norovirus is transmitted through food or through food. Symptoms of a viral attack include food poisoning such as fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

“This clinical symptom also appeared in the extraordinary Norovirus incident that occurred in China, to be precise in Shanxi province,” explained Prof. Ari. “The clinical symptoms that appear due to this virus can occur within 24 hours after eating contaminated food.”

How to prevent norovirus

In order for the norovirus not to spread, Professor Ari suggested that the quality of food provided by restaurants, offices or homes be properly maintained. People in Indonesia are also advised to diligently wash their hands with soap.

“Until now, the principle of handling in case of being infected by this virus is to provide medicines to alleviate the symptoms of the disease and prevent dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea. Replace food with softer foods such as porridge and avoid eating spicy foods and fatty, “Ari said.
