The provincial government of DKI Jakarta responded to statement by University of Indonesia (UI) hydrologist Firdaus Ali regarding DKI Governor Anies Baswedan’s narrative on flood management in the capital, which was deemed misleading. DKI Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria said Anies’ naturalization concept is equipped with standardization to deal with flooding.

“Both can be applied. Therefore, seeing the situation and the state of the river we can do it with the normalization program, which is naturalization,” DKI Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria told reporters at the DPR building. DKI Jakarta, Jalan Kebon Sirih, Jakarta, on Monday (10/19/2020).

According to Riza, there is no need to compare naturalization with normalization.

“Then you don’t have to compare it. It has a good purpose. We will confirm which one is included in the normalization program, which is the naturalization program, ”said politician Gerindra.

“There are still 13 rivers, why should we make a fuss? It is our duty together (the central and local governments) to prevent floods,” Riza continued.

Previously, DKI Jakarta DPRD’s Special Flood Committee (Panso) met with various experts to provide information on flood management. University of Indonesia hydrologist Firdaus Ali spoke about the concept of flooding by DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan.

“(Anies said) it is against sunatullah if the water is channeled through the sewer into the sea. Because one of the sewer designs is mine. A new narrative is presented, naturalization, I saw a YouTube recording, this is a detour.” Firdaus said in a joint meeting with DPRD’s Special Committee on Floods. DKI Jakarta at the DPRD DKI Jakarta building, Jalan Kebon Sirih, Jakarta, today.

Anies’s statement was broadcast in the 2017 DKI Pilgub campaign. At the time, Anies was opposed to the eviction of resident settlements by a river normalization program carried out to overcome the floods in Jakarta.

According to Firdaus, there is a difference in concept between naturalization and normalization. Naturalization does not work for flood control.

“It is not a good naturalization, it is not the best normalization. It gets bad, the skull is placed on the knee, the shoes are placed on the head,” he said.

“Standardization works for flood control. As soon as it rains, it will flow downstream as fast as possible because there is no room to contain it,” Firdaus said.
