JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Vice President of the Ulema Council of Indonesia (MUI), Muhyiddin Junaidi, regretted that President Joko Widodo had just been invited to discuss the Employment Creation Law.

He felt that President Jokowi should have invited him before DPR and the government passed the law.

“Unfortunately, we were invited after the bill became law. We should have been invited before the law was passed,” Muhyiddin told Kompas.com on Monday (10/19/2020).

Muhyiddin explained that he was invited to meet Jokowi at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Friday last week.

He came to the Palace at 09.00 WIB with the Head of Legal Affairs of MUI, Basri Bermanda, and the Head of the Division of Economic Empowerment of MUI, Lukmanul Hakim.

During the meeting, Muhyiddin communicated to the president the public’s objection to the Copyright Act that has been covered by the MUI.

Muhyiddin also asked President Jokowi to repeal the Employment Creation Law through a government regulation instead of a law (Perppu).

“But it seems that the government opposed because the bill was a government initiative. So what is possible is to complete the derived regulations so that the elaboration is not out of play,” Muhyidin said.

Muhyidin mentioned that during the meeting, President Jokowi also requested input from the MUI to formulate the rules of the Cipta Kerja Law in the form of government and presidential regulations.

However, Muhyidin assessed that no matter how good the derived regulations that the government will formulate later are, it still cannot be a solution for the problematic articles of the Employment Creation Law.

This is because derived regulations in the form of PP or Perpres cannot exceed the Law. Therefore, Muhyiddin regrets why MUI was not invited when the Employment Creation Law was not passed.

“I don’t know what’s behind all this. We should have been invited a long time ago to give their opinion, complete, etc. It wasn’t after the law was passed that they invited us. Now that’s difficult,” he said.
