Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto is interested in buying a fighter jet from Austria, the Eurofighter Typoon. To follow up, Prabowo will pay a working visit to Austria to meet with the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Austria, Klaudia Tanner, on Tuesday (10/20).
This meeting is designed to strengthen the main (alutsist) weapons system, especially in the air force. Quoted on its official page, there are four countries that are founders of the consortium, namely Great Britain and Germany with 33% each, Italy with 21% and Spain with 13%.
Eurofighter users have a long history of use in various countries. Among them, when Saudi Arabia bought a deal with Great Britain in 2005 to replace the previous defense equipment, namely the Saudi Tornados. A year later, this plane was already on patrol during the Winter Olympics in Italy.
So far, more than 550 Eurofighter Typhoon units have been produced for seven countries, namely Germany, England, Italy, Spain, Austria, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
In use on the battlefield, this aircraft has played a role in several major battles. Even when a combat mission took place in Libya in 2011.
In terms of specifications, this aircraft is a delta wing capable of seeing beyond the limits of sight (BVR), a short-range air superiority fighter, with surface attack capability.
This aircraft has advanced weaponry, such as a pair of Mauser BK27mm rifles. The Eurofighter Typhoon also has 13 hard firepower points, four under each wing and five under the fuselage.
In terms of price, the Typhoon is in the range of between 58 and 70 million dollars a unit for the European market. Meanwhile, for exports outside of Europe, the price can reach 124 million dollars.
This experience and various specs supposedly made Prabowo attracted. However, it did not negotiate with the four countries that make up this consortium of combat aircraft. But with Austria, a consuming country. Therefore, it is likely that Prabowo will buy the used fighter plane.

One of the country’s main media outlets, Kronen Zeitung, has reported on Prabowo’s planned meeting with the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Austria, Klaudia Tanner.
“Next week there will probably be a landmark meeting at the Austrian Defense Ministry. Prabowo Subianto will meet personally with Minister Klaudia Tanner to discuss the Eurofighter Typhoon purchase agreement,” Kronen Zeitung wrote as quoted by CNBC Indonesia on Saturday (17 / 10/2020).
