Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Thai government has re-declared a state of emergency. The government has even banned gatherings of more than four people and online postings that are considered a threat to national security.
This was held on Thursday (10/15/2020) as a step to end massive pro-democracy protests. Earlier, the crowd demonstrated to demand that Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha step down and demand reforms to the government of King Maha Vajiralongkorn.
The order was aimed at stamping out unconstitutional protests. Especially since Wednesday (10/14/2020), the meeting outside the prime minister’s office and the confrontation with the royal loyalists.
Yesterday’s tension also erupted when thousands of protesters gathered at the Democracy Monument in front of the royal caravan carrying King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his family. Later, the police carried out road closures to drive protesters away from the actual route.
“The state of emergency allows the seizure of electronic communication equipment, data and weapons that are suspected of causing an emergency situation,” said government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri.

Early Thursday, the government deployed the police to disperse the protesters. The government arrested 20 people in connection with the protests.
“They have to face legal procedures without exception,” he said.
Meanwhile, pro-democracy activists have repeatedly cried out for the monarchy to adapt to modern times. Including the abolition of the government defamation law – which protects the king from criticism – and for the king not to get involved in politics.

“The new constitution should lead Thailand to a democratic system with a fully regulated monarchy,” Tattep Ruangprapaikitse said.
“This could be the last battle for Thai democracy.”
Thailand itself has been affected by the corona (Covid-19). The economy entered a recession, as a result of negative GDP for two consecutive quarters. In the first quarter on a (YoY) basis, the economy was -2%. In the second quarter, the economy -12.2%.
