Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – Thailand declared a state of emergency in the capital, Bangkok, after tens of thousands of anti-government protesters surrounded the prime minister’s office demanding more democracy and less power for the monarchy.
The statement, which prohibits gatherings of five or more people and allows the arrest of anyone who breaks the rules, went into effect immediately, according to a notice in the Royal Gazette cited by Bloomberg.
Thousands of protesters, mostly led by students, marched towards the government building, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha’s office on Wednesday (10/14/2020) in a series of anti-government demonstrations that began in early July.
The protesters are calling for the resignation of Prayuth, the former military commander who launched a coup in 2014, and are rewriting the constitution by a military-appointed panel so that he can remain in last year’s election.
The protesters also wanted to stop the monarchy, such as banning the king from supporting the coup and repealing laws criminalizing insults against King Maha Vajiralongkorn and members of the royal family.
Quoted from Channel News Asia, the crowd began to gather around 8 a.m. and resumed protests that were originally scheduled for 2 p.m.
“Sources report that there are groups that try to control the area and the perimeter; before the previous meeting time [14.00] to obstruct the Popular Party demonstrations, ”said a statement issued by the protesters.
