JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Police arrested eight people, most of whom were high-ranking members of the Coalition for Action to Save Indonesia (WE), in connection with the demonstration against the Employment Creation Law that had been in place since the last week.

On Tuesday morning (10/13/2020), the police initially confirmed the arrest of three US officials consisting of Anton Permana, Syahganda Nainggolan and Jumhur Hidayat.

Syahganda is a member of OUR Executive Committee. At the time, Anton and Jumhur were American officials.

Meanwhile, Anton was arrested in the Rawamangun area on October 12, 2020. Then on Tuesday (10/13/2020), the police arrested Syahganda in Depok and Jumhur in South Jakarta.

As it turned out, the arrests were made of a total of eight people in connection with the action against the Job Creation Law that ended in chaos.

In addition to the three people, the police arrested the chief of the United States, Medan Khairi Amri, JG, NZ and WRP in North Sumatra from October 9 to 12, 2020.

The police then arrested KA in South Tangerang on October 10, 2020.

According to the police, they were arrested on suspicion of inciting and spreading hate speech based on SARA.

The head of the Public Information Office (Karopenmas) of the Public Relations Division of the National Police, Brigadier General (Pol) Awi Setiyono, said the incitement was suspected of causing the demonstration participants to reject the Law of Job Creation to act in an anarchic way.

“The above outline provides information that creates a feeling of hatred and hostility towards individuals or groups based on SARA and incitement,” Awi said at the Bareskrim building in South Jakarta on Tuesday (10/13/2020).

They are suspected of violating article 45 A, paragraph 2 of Law Number 19 of 2016 on ITE and / or article 160 of the Penal Code on Incitement.

“The criminal threat, of which the ITE Act is 6 years in prison or a fine of 1,000 million rupees and for incitement in Article 160 of the Penal Code, the penalty is 6 years in prison,” Awi said.

According to Awi’s statement, the arrest was related to a conversation on the WhatsApp group of applications.

In fact, he said, there were plans to commit destruction in the demonstration against the Employment Creation Law.

Meanwhile, five other detainees have been identified as suspects.

The police arrests of the three American leaders also drew criticism.

Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid said the police action was only aimed at sowing fear.
