Launching Military-Medicine.comOn July 9, 2015, the Ministry of Defense of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste (RDTL) wrote a letter of invitation to the Medical Team of the Gatot Soebroto Army Central Hospital, Jakarta.

The letter was intended to seek medical help in Timor Leste.

The letter was later responded to by Defense Minister General (ret) Ryamizard Ryacudu to build a medical task force comprised of the Indonesian Navy, Indonesian Navy, Air Force, TNI Surgeons Headquarters and Mindef.

A plan was drawn up for the mission to be carried out with the KRI Dr. Soeharso 990, a Tier III hospital warship from Armur Indonesia.

The Working Group then made a frame of reference as a mission guide, a Team Order of the Working Group of the three Working Groups, carried out internal meetings and coordination with representatives of RDTL in Jakarta.

An advance team was dispatched to Dili to see what RDTL really needed to help, the spectrum of the disease, and also to assess the medical resources and health infrastructure that could be used.

Meanwhile, a hospital warship was prepared at the Main Naval Base in Surabaya, East Java.

Medical services will be provided ashore and on board in selected cases.

Two Army and Marine Corps medical battalions are also planned to be on board and will provide ground medical services.

The main health services are general and specialized health services, including dental services.

The patients were from RDTL veterans, active duty military and police, and people from Timor Leste.

At that time, there are expected to be around 2000 patients from Jan 30 to Feb 1, 2016 in Dili.

The trip was the ship’s first mission abroad in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense.

For this mission, the KRI SHS-990 carried a Bell 412 EP helicopter built by PTDI Bandung West Java in 2012 belonging to 400 Squadron Air Wing 1, Naval Aviation Center for air evacuation.

The Task Force consists of 426 people, consisting of 156 crew members and 51 specialist doctors and dentists gathered in Surabaya on January 24, 2016. The team was led by the Director General of Defense Strengthening, Rear Admiral Agus Purwoto .

After an unforgettable four-day journey from Surabaya, the ship arrived at the port of Dili on January 29, 2016.

The ship was warmly received by the Indonesian Ambassador in Dili, Primanto Hendrasmoro, and by the RDTL Minister of Defense, Cirilo Cristovao, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Hernani Coelho and the Minister of Health, Maria do Ceu Pina, as well as by the residents of Dili.

RDTL Defense Minister Cirilo Cristovao affirmed that this mission represents good relations between the two governments.

Subsequently, the health services were officially inaugurated by Commander Forza Defeza, Major General Lere Anan Timor.

High-ranking officials then visited the ship’s facilities for use in the mission.

On the first day, 765 veterans and active duty personnel were treated, including several VIPs who were medically examined and 13 surgeries.

On the second day there were 1955 patients with 113 operations performed.

On the third day as on the last day there were 706 patients and 70 operations.

Xanana Gusmao, then the country’s Minister of Strategic Planning and Investments, visited the ship twice and hoped such activities could be expanded in the future.

He expressed his deep appreciation, obliged barracks, in Tetum, for the medical assistance provided by Indonesia when he invited all the officers to dine at the Timor Plaza.

Xanana Gusmao said that this mission would improve relations between the governments of Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
