JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The ratification of the Omnibus Law of the Employment Creation Law by the DPR and the government in a plenary meeting at the DPR RI Building, Senayan, Central Jakarta on Monday (10/5/2020), sparked protests from various parties , one of which was the labor group.
Labor and student circles responded to the Cipta Karya Law with demonstrations to hold labor strikes.
They urged that the Cipta Karya Law be canceled. One of them is to issue a Perppu.
The demonstrations took place in various Indonesian cities, one of which was DKI Jakarta from Wednesday (7/10/2020) to Thursday (8/10/2020).
For the Jakarta area, the rally focused on two locations, namely around the DPR RI building, Senayan, Central Jakarta; and Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta.
The police tried to mediate with workers and students to cancel the action because Indonesia was still in a situation with the Covid-19 pandemic.
The crowd is feared to give rise to a new Covid-19 cluster.
The demonstrations were peaceful on Wednesday. However, different conditions were met on Thursday.

10.00 – 12.00 WIB
Polda Metro Jaya carried out an operation to assure the masses that they wanted to hold a demonstration.
Until 12.30 pm WIB, the police detained about 200 young people who were about to hold a demonstration. They came from Jakarta, Serang, Tangerang, Bogor and Bandung.
According to the head of the Polda Metro Public Relations Division Jaya Kombes Yusri Yunus, several of the detainees were suspected of belonging to the Anarko group. They want to create a riot in the middle of a demonstration.
Based on the results of checking their cell phones, they usually receive a short message asking them to perform a demonstration.
The police continued to carry out blockades at various points on the Jakarta border and buffer cities to prevent the movement of the masses.
However, the waves continued to arrive until they filled the Senayan and Simpang Harmoni Complex, which are adjacent to the State Palace.
12.30 – 13.00 WIB
The masses began to arrive at Harmoni Simpang and tried to head to the State Palace. The police and TNI intercepted them as they approached the Presidential Palace complex.
“We will go to the Presidential Palace that was built with the people’s struggle,” said one speaker.
The action to express opinions has not yet taken place because there are still discussions between the masses and the police.
Faced with this situation, the Chief Commissioner of the Central Jakarta Metro Police, Lilik Sumardi, appealed to road users not to cross the Harmoni crossing.

13.30 – 13.50 WIB
The crowd was still trying to force the police to open barricades in order to approach the Presidential Palace complex.
“Open, open, open the door, open the door right now,” said the arrested crowd.
Representatives of the masses were seen negotiating with the police to allow them to pass and convey their aspirations in front of the Palace.
“We keep silent, we pray, we want to negotiate with the police chief. Let us pray to Allah the Almighty that we are allowed,” said one speaker.
14.30 – 15.00 WIB
Discussions between the student masses and the police continued. Finally, clashes between students and police were inevitable.
A crowd around Harmoni Simpang became involved in clashes with authorities around 2:50 p.m. WIB. Meanwhile, the demonstration at the Senayan Parliament Complex remained peaceful.
The confrontation at the Harmoni intersection began when the crowd threw a bottle that hit the officers forming a barricade.
The police immediately fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The crowd dressed in alma mater jackets from various universities dispersed around Harmoni Simpang to avoid the tear gas fired.
Clashes also broke out around the statue of the horse Arjuna Wiwaha. The crowd also made their way to the State Palace, but the police blocked them.
Tear gas tears were heard from the Simpang Harmoni area, Jalan Merdeka Selatan, to the Patung Kuda area.
Activities in the area had to be stopped. PT Transportation Jakarta has also stopped service operations to ensure the safety of its customers.

The mob defended themselves by throwing stones and other objects at the officers.
15.00 – 15.40 WIB
At 3:38 p.m. WIB, the police returned Jalan Suryo Pranoto to the crowd. The clash that initially erupted at the Harmoni intersection at the rear of the Merdeka Palace has now shifted towards Jalan Suryo Pranoto.
On the way, the crowd was repelled with tear gas fires by officers.
Meanwhile, the police in the front row began to advance towards the crowd using their shields.
Even so, the masses continued to throw stones and crystals at the officers.
At 4:00 p.m. WIB
After an hour of fighting, the crowd began to come under control. Suddenly, the crowd approached the police without a fight.
The crowd appeared to salute the police, not a few who embraced the police. Approaching the police, several protesters yelled at the camera Compass TV.
“We just want to talk, listen!” exclaimed one of the protesters.
“Our enemy is not the police!” said the other.
“The police protect, do not shoot!” exclaimed another.
Some protesters were shouting while chanting “let’s go home, let’s go home”, but other protesters still remained at the scene.
At 5:15 p.m. WIB
About 1 hour later, clashes suddenly broke out again in the Harmoni Simpang area. The second mutiny was more chaotic than the first confrontation.
The second confrontation started when the crowd that had been detained earlier at Jalan Suryopranoto started walking towards the Harmoni crossing.
Unexpectedly, the police began firing tear gas. The clash erupted and the crowd was again beaten towards Jalan Suryopranoto.
There are also masses lined up to cover part of Jalan Abdul Muis leading to Tanah Abang in central Jakarta.
They carried a series of white posters with writing depicting disappointment at the enactment of the Copyright Act.
“Close ranks. Those who are still outside, please step into the line,” a speaker told protesters over a loudspeaker.
After all lined up, the crowd slowly walked towards the horse statue rotunda.
Meanwhile, the other masses still using their respective campus alma mater tried to prevent the eruption of tear gas.
18.00 – 19.00 WIB
After 1 hour, the crash at Simpang Harmoni still happened and showed no signs of abating.
The crowd was even more anarchist as police continued to tear gas at them.
The mob even damaged several public facilities, such as the Harmoni police post and the police post near the Arjuna Wiwaha statue.
It doesn’t stop there. The crowd continued to spread towards the Tugu Tani area, the Hotel Indonesia roundabout, and spread towards the City Hall complex.
Destruction of public facilities continues, including the burning of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources office, the Transjakarta bus stop, Bundaran HI and Sarinah. The Tugu Tani police post was also subject to arson.
The crowd began to spiral out of control, while the police only fired tear gas around Harmoni Simpang towards the Hotel Indonesia roundabout area.
The traffic flow is closed. The police continued to force the masses to disperse.
19.30 – 20.00 WIB
The clashes in the Harmoni Simpang area with the HI roundabout began to subside. Orange troops began clearing debris from a public facility that had been damaged by crowds.
DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan also checked public facilities damaged by the masses.
22.00 – 22.30 WIB
The fighting intensified again. This time, the confrontation was carried out by the masses that broke away from Harmoni Simpang and spread to other areas such as the Senen and Semanggi areas.
At 10.30pm WIB, the previously divided masses returned from the Senayan roundabout to the Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout.
They made a scene by throwing new police officers on guard from various directions.
Police fired tear gas to repel the crowd. This caused the masses to run towards the Senayan roundabout.
The police continued to advance and push back the masses to disperse action from the Semanggi area.
This chaotic action became a spectacle for motorists because previously the road was open to vehicles.
Around the same time, the police station under the Senen flyover, the Transjakarta Senen bus stop and the old cinema building in the Senen area were also set on fire by the masses.
The traffic around the police post was observed to be heavy, as there were crowds of people under the Senen overpass.
The mob not only damaged public facilities, but also burned a Honda Stream-type car passing in front of the Treva Hotel, Cikini, in central Jakarta.
