JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Council of Global Union, a federation of international unions, sent a letter to President Joko Widodo rejecting the Job Creation Act.
Citing the letter, they said that the Employment Creation Law prioritized the interests of investors over the interests of society, labor and the environment.
They also stated that the Employment Creation Law threatened the democratic process because the discussion took place in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, where public hearings with citizen participation were limited.

“Unions have participated in the discussion of the law in the DPR. But nothing has changed according to their expectations,” he was quoted from the official website of Building and Wood Workers International (BWI), a member of the federation, on Tuesday. (10/6/2020).
“The union believes that the labor group in the Employment Creation Law ignores the rights and welfare of workers and is contrary to Law No. 13 of 2003 on Labor,” they wrote.
The Federation also filed a series of lawsuits before the Employment Creation Law.
They request that the existence of the Employment Creation Law not modify or eliminate the provisions on labor rights stipulated in the Labor Law.

They also requested that the Manpower Law be strengthened in its articles, especially those that regulate the rights of workers.
Then they asked the DPR and the government to open spaces for dialogue with the unions so that the labor cluster in the Employment Creation Law still refers to the Manpower Law.
Next, the federation asked the government and the DPR to guarantee that the articles of the labor cluster, especially in the energy sector, that the Constitutional Court had canceled, were not revived.

In the letter they also expressed their full support for the national strike carried out by the Indonesian unions from 6 to 8 October.
